Explaining Emotions To Kids

On this journey, your kid will learn what emotions he or she has in his or her inner cosmos. He or she will learn how to recognize emotions and how to deal with them.

Understanding Emotions Has To Be Learned

Often, kids don’t even know how certain emotions feel and how they express themselves. This does not mean that they have never felt these emotions – on the contrary. They just don’t know how to name them or what they actually are. It can be quite confusing if you don’t know what exactly is happening inside of you! You feel powerless and an endless number of questions swirl through your head.

  • What is an emotion? And why does it exist?
  • How do I recognize an emotion in others and in myself?
  • How do I communicate my emotions to others and what reasons can they have?

Emotion regulation for kids
Once kids have learned to recognize and understand their emotions, they need to know how to deal with them. Emotion regulation means keeping control of emotional states and the reactions they can cause. Kids who lack successful strategies for dealing with their own emotions often have difficulty socializing with others. They then quickly feel that their emotions are controlling them, but do not know how to react in any other way.

If, on the other hand, kids succeed in developing a suitable strategy for dealing with their emotions, they also find it easier to deal with pressure, challenges or other difficulties. They make friends more easily, go through life more carefree and are less susceptible to mental illness.

Tipp: To prevent hasty reactions, our impulsivity course can help, too!

This Is How Aumio Helps With Emotional Whirl Winds

Knowing that emotions are there is an important step in being able to regulate them later on. In the exercises with Aumio, kids get to know basic emotions such as anger, trust, fear, love, sadness, joy, shame and gratitude in more detail. They learn to listen to themselves and analyze their own emotions in detail.

This allows them to better understand how a feeling expresses itself, why it is there, and what it is trying to say. They learn to accept the emotion – it’s okay that it’s there! However, in order to not let it take them over or to resolve an uncomfortable feeling, they learn two methods:

  • Communication: the emotion will get smaller if you talk about it with a trusted person. How am I feeling right now? And what could be the trigger?
  • Distance: It helps just as much to first gain distance from the emotion. By taking a few deep breaths, the feeling moves into the distance. Now there is room for positive thoughts!

On A Journey Through “Emotschu Galaxy”

This course takes your kid on a journey to the distant galaxy of the Emotschus. Together with Aumio, he or she flies from planet to planet and learns about a wide variety of emotions.

Trust in Clouds
Trust – this is a feeling your kid will experience in the first part of Galactic emotions. In this meditation the kid is moving around and he or she will try to be as mindful of his steps as possible. With each step he will gather confidence. Confidence that expands throughout the body. Doesn’t this give us strength?

It’s OK to be sad
Sadness – this is the emotion your kid explores in the second part of Galactic emotions. In this active exercise, he experiences how sadness expresses itself inside. What happens to the body inside as well as outside? How can you tell how strong the feeling is right now? Answers to these questions can be found here.

Aumio Is Based on Science

The methods are scientifically based and the effectiveness of mindfulness has been proven by a growing number of studies. The positive effect of Aumio has also already been shown in two studies with more than 40 families. Families reported reduced concentration problems and fewer problems and disputes in the school context. General cognitive performance and health-related quality of life also improved.
